   CANINE TESTING

TEMPERAMENT TESTING:
This testing is often done around the age of 15 months for proof
of soundness in dogs that are breeding stock or to confirm any
dog's soundness.

During this test, dogs are gently exposed to different sounds,
surfaces and situations designed to elicit reactions which will
display temperament, similar to what he would encounter on a
normal walk with his handler.  Breed specific function is taken
into consideration.  Shyness, timidity, and improper aggression
are common reasons for failure.  A pass rating on this test
allows the dog to carry TT after its name.  Setterwoods owner,
Arlene Pilcer is certified by the USTTA  (United States
Temperament Testing Association) as qualified to perform
temperament testing.

PUPPY APTITUDE TESTING
This testing is done at 49 days (7 weeks).  PAT testing consists
of a series of exercises which include social attractionfollowing,
dominance and retrieving, as well as sound, touch, and light
sensitivity
.
The testing itself must be done by someone who is
consistent and who is skilled in reading body language and
expression.

PAT can indicate to the breeder a dog's behavioral tendencies
and is an invaluable tool in  the placement of puppies in an
appropriate home.  It has been said to give the breeder a
realistic look at the raw material that makes up each pup
before exposure to environmental influences.   During the PAT,
test sheets are completed and video recorded, enabling the
breeder to review the results and behaviors of each pup.

Arlene trained with Gail Fisher for several years and follows
the testing guidelines outline by Ms Fisher and Wendy Volhard.
The findings and observations are discussed with the breeder,
and can be a tremendous help with puppy placement and
socialization programs.

CANINE GOOD CITIZEN TESTING
The American Kennel Club has outlined CGC requirements and
encourages all dog owners to train for and pass the CGC.  This
test consists of planned exercises which include basic skills such
as walking on a leash, coming when called, meeting strangers,
staying  put, etc.  Testing may be performed whenever an owner
feels confident their dog can pass.  Here at Setterwoods we offer
a CGC course that teaches these skills in 5 evening lessons
with the test itself conducted on the 6th night.  All dogs that pass
the test are issue an AKC Canine Good Citizen certificate.

THERAPY DOG TESTING
Therapy Dogs Incorporated is the oldest and largest therapy
dog organization in the world.  Established in 1976, TDI was
formed to encourage the training and acceptance of volunteer
therapy dogs.  TDI provides the handler with insurance, puts
out a newsletter and sets forth therapy dog guidelines.  Therapy
dogs visit nursing homes, hospitals, 4-H camps, schools, and
public gatherings.  A therapy dog can brighten the day for an ill
or lonely person just by being friendly.  The requirements for
passing TDI testing are similar to that of Canine Good Citizen,
with additional stipulations for reaction to medical equipment,
tolerance of infirmities, etc.   In addition to proving a dog can
follow basic commands and has a willingness to do this work,
3 supervised visits in the  therapy environment are required.

Arlene has been testing dogs and handlers for TDI since
1993, as well as doing considerable volunteer work in local
facilities with her own beloved dogs.  "In my opinion
the world could use as many therapy dogs as people could
devote time for.  The work they do is priceless."
